Welcome the summer of 2012!
How things change.
Let's hope it's not going to be wet all through the summer. After a very warm, very early spell we found ourselves slap bang in the middle of the wettest April on record.
We started turning the cows out in the fields during the day in March to take advantage of the warmth, even though the grass growth didn't really justify it. When the weather turned and we had to keep them in they were less than happy.
Now the fields are very soft, very wet, and definitely not fit for cows. As long as it keeps on raining they understand that it's nicer in the barn than in the field. We're just hoping that the water and the warmth will lead to a good grass growing season. We'll see.
As you can see from this picture, our bull Cumulus was a real sweetie. He has now left us. If you want to see him you can visit him at Sheepdrove Farm where he is now in residence. We hope he will be as good for them as he has been for us.Our new bull, Memel, has been in residence for a while now. After a slightly grumpy start (understandable since previously he was acquired as a deposit for a tractor, how demeaning!), he is turning into a really sweet natured beast who is a delight to have around the yard. We just hope that the cows think the same!
